COURSE

USING QUALITY IMPROVEMENT TO IMPROVE PATIENT CARE

Who should attend

The course is for individuals designated to work with clinical teams, leads for quality improvement, primary care group improvement facilitators, clinical effectiveness and clinical audit facilitators and any others who have a role in supporting clinical or management teams to improve the quality of their services.

What you learn

The course takes participants though a systematic, scientifically-sound process to work with stakeholders and a team to achieve an important improvement in the quality of care. The process starts with motivating a group of staff to work as an effective improvement team and continues through sustaining improvements over time, using any or all of 30 QI tools and techniques taught in the course.

Each participant receives a 590–page 20–chapter Quality Improvement Methods for Healthcare Manual. Each chapter gives detailed how-to instructions on moving through key stages in the improvement process and the QI tools or techniques to use at each stage. In addition to the Manual, participants receive other useful resources about supporting the QI process in a healthcare setting.

Certificates of completion of the course are provided. The course is Certified as conforming to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements in the UK by The CPD Certification Service.

WORKSHOP

QUALITY IMPROVEMENT

Who should attend

The workshop is for staff who want to work together with their colleagues to make improvements in real work situations. The staff can be clinical or non-clinical, single or multi-professional, or from one or several services, departments, directorates or agencies. Managers responsible for a group are encouraged to participate. Others who will support a group will benefit from participating.

We often prepare local quality development or improvement or clinical audit facilitators to facilitate teams' work in the workshop.

What you learn

Most healthcare services are so complex that it is not possible for one or two individuals working alone to make and sustain substantial improvements. It takes a team effort to achieve and maintain improvements that provide significant benefits to patients and service users.

The one–day workshop gets participants involved in selecting a priority subject for improvement, planning how to get the stakeholders committed to the project, planning the baseline measurement for the QIP, and anticipating acting on the findings of baseline measurement.

The two– and three–day versions of the workshop include more detail on gathering evidence of the effects of current practice, analysing the problems that are occurring and finding their root causes, and planning and implementing changes in practice to achieve intended improvements.

Each participant receives a 242–page book, Getting Quality Improvement Right to Benefit Patients, on the QI process, which includes how to go through the QI process stage-by-stage with over 30 QI tools to use at various stages of a QIP. Participants also get a workbook that structures the practical work in the workshop and allows for recording the work done and decisions made about a QIP during the workshop.

Certificates of participation in the workshop are provided. The workshop is Certified as conforming to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements in the UK by The CPD Certification Service.

WORKSHOP

HOW TO TEACH QUALITY IMPROVEMENT

Who should attend

The workshop is for experienced quality improvement staff who are expected to teach others about the QI process and how to do a quality improvement project (QIP).

What you learn

The aim of the workshop is to prepare staff to teach individuals and/or teams how to carry out a QIP.

Some people think that a QIP is so logical that staff don’t have a lot to learn about how to do a QIP. The feeling is that if a leader just tells staff what’s involved in a QIP and walks through an example, staff will be able to do a QIP on their own. But staff carrying out a QIP want their work to be successful and they don’t want to make mistakes as they work on their projects. They welcome working through a systematic process that supports them stage-by-stage through their own ideas for a QIP. That’s why teaching staff about QI should have an educational theory and science approach.

This workshop is about adult learners and what it takes to produce learners that are successful in carrying out the new processes and practices they learn. Behavioural learning objectives, learner needs analysis, giving clear demonstrations, helping learners through real practice, and reflections on learning all are covered in this workshop in detail. Practical points such as making arrangements for teaching sessions, evaluating their success and acting on evaluation feedback also are included.

Each participant receives a 116–page book on How To Teach Quality Improvement.

Certificates of participation in the workshop are provided.
