Managing a Clinical Audit Programme — a local workshop for clinical audit and clinical governance staff

Benefits of the workshop

Clinical staff and managers can be concerned about whether the time staff spent on a clinical audit programme is worthwhile, particularly if no action is taken to make any needed improvements in patient care. A clinical audit programme needs to be well planned and managed to ensure that improvements in healthcare services actually happen.

Intended participants

The workshop is for staff employed to support clinical audit, clinical audit leads and other healthcare professionals who are responsible for supporting and leading a clinical audit programme for clinical services.

Learning objectives

Participants in the workshop get practical guidance on how to plan, support and manage clinical audit programmes including:

  • roles and responsibilities related to the completion of a clinical audit programme
  • principles and processes of programme and project management
  • techniques to support clinical audit programme and project management
  • the importance of specifying critical points and outcomes in a clinical audit programme and project
  • how to use monitoring techniques to check on progress of a programme and project
  • how to use project management techniques to manage an entire clinical audit programme
  • how to identify and handle possible constraints or barriers to successful clinical audits and clinical audit programmes.
Venue and workshop format

The workshop includes short presentations of principles and techniques and individual practical work. Participants plan how to manage a clinical service’s or organization’s clinical audit programme during the workshop, using project management approaches and tools.

We provide the workshop in local organizations on a day most convenient to the staff who will participate.

The workshop runs from 9.15 am to 4.30 pm.

Each participant receives a workbook that includes information on applying project management principles to managing a clinical audit programme and practical assignments to complete in the workshop. Certificates of participation in the workshop are provided.
