Advancing Clinical Audit — a 3–day national and local course

Benefits of the course

The course helps participants strengthen clinical audit activities in their organizations. It provides practical advice on how to enhance key stages in the clinical audit process and helps participants think strategically about how to ensure that clinical audits actually benefit patients.

Intended participants

The course is for individuals who have at least one year’s experience in a job that involves supporting clinical audit and/or clinical effectiveness programmes.

Learning objectives and format

The course is designed to help participants develop competence and confidence in how to:

  • link the performance of the clinical audit process with accountability for the quality and safety of patient care
  • sharpen the design of clinical audits and work with clinicians to design clinical audits that are worth doing
  • improve the reliability of data collected for clinical audits
  • calculate compliance with clinical audit measures the right way
  • analyse types of variation in clinical practice and guide clinicians to act on variation the right way
  • influence clinical teams to analyse audit findings effectively
  • use project management approaches to manage the work involved in delivering clinical audit programmes
  • apply principles and strategies for taking action to achieve changes in practice
  • handle data protection and ethics issues related to clinical audit properly
  • collate information about the effectiveness of clinical audits carried out in clinical services
  • influence their organizations to improve how the clinical audit process is carried out.
Course programme

The programme runs from 9.00 am to 5.30 pm on Day 1, 8.45 am to 5.30 pm on Day 2 and 8.45 am to 4.30 pm on Day 3.

The course includes individual and group work with detailed individual and group feedback from the course tutor.

Materials

Each course participant receives a 370–page Advancing Clinical Audit manual and other learning and reference materials. Certificates of participation are provided.
