Quality Improvement Book

qibookGetting Quality Improvement Right to Benefit Patients is a 210-page practical guide for clinical staff on the quality improvement (QI) process and how to carry out QI projects that focus on producing benefits for patients and patient care. The book is easy-to-read and has a number of diagrams, tables and examples.

The book starts out with clear explanations of the quality improvement process and how it relates to the other processes healthcare teams carry out, such as patient safety, audit of the quality of patient care, measuring and acting on the patient experience, and how it relates to governance of healthcare services. It explains from the evidence base what it takes in a healthcare organization to be successful in quality improvement and how different models or approaches for improvement fit in.

The book then walks through stages of the improvement process starting with forming a team of people who want to work together on improvement, identifying and engaging key stakeholders in the work, deciding on what the team wants to achieve as improvement, and so on. There is a chapter for each key stage in the improvement process.

The book also includes a very detailed 'How to' section that includes over 30 different tools that teams can use to support QI projects and exactly how to use each tool in a step-by-step format. Extensive references are provided to support good practice in carrying out QI projects in healthcare organizations.
