Changing Clinical Practice — a local workshop for clinical staff

Benefits of the workshop

The workshop is intended to help staff understand what’s involved in achieving and maintaining changes in clinical practice. The workshop reviews current research evidence about achieving changes in clinical practice and suggests how to apply the findings.

The workshop provides a model — I-M-P-R-O-V-E-S — to help people remember all the stages needed and the right sequence of the stages to achieve and maintain change. It also provides techniques teams can use to carry out the stages n the model and opportunities to think about about how the model can be applied in actual work situations.

Intended participants

The workshop is intended for individuals who will assume responsibility for achieving or helping to achieve changes in clinical practice. Clinicians, managers, clinical effectiveness and clinical audit facilitators, quality development managers, clinical governance leads and managers will benefit from participation in the workshop.

Learning objectives

Participants learn how to:

  • help people accept that change is needed to achieve identified improvements
  • select strategies most likely to achieve a desired improvement
  • formulate a plan to implement and evaluate the way selected to achieve improvement and carry out the plan
  • verify that the desired improvement is achieved and act to improve the level of achievement or to maintain the level achieved.
